Open Access' is the online access to digital scientific content (articles, conference proceedings, data, etc.) without copyright-related restrictions.

The authors give their consent for open access to their work according to the terms of special licenses (Creative Commons, Open Content License). These licenses usually make the work freely available over the internet provided that it is used for non-commercial purposes and attribution is made when using, distributing, reproducing, presenting, etc.

Readers may freely use the material made available for research, educational, and other purposes in accordance with the terms under which the author made his work available.

There are two different ways of implementing Open Access: OA journals and OA repositories. OA journals are also known as the 'gold road', while OA repositories are known as the 'green road'.

Bibliography

Open Access is implemented in two ways: open-access journals (gold road) and open-access repositories (green road).

Open Access Repositories (Green Road): Authors self-archiving their work in an open access repository. These works can be pre-prints, evaluated post-prints, technical reports, statistical research data, etc.

Self-archiving is accomplished without the author's approval. Today, most publishers of scientific journals allow authors to deposit their publications (preprints or postprints) in the repositories of their organizations, with which they have a working or collaboration relationship (affiliation).

More information about the rights that publishers give to authors can be found on the website Sherpa-Romeo.

Open Access Journals (Golden Path): Authors normally submit their papers to the journal awaiting acceptance and peer review. Upon completion of the review process, papers are published in an issue of the journal and are freely available online.

In open-access journals, the author team retains the copyright of the article and is often asked to cover the editing/publication costs (known as APC - Article Processing Charge). Both AUTh Library and HEAL-Link participate in the open access movement ensuring discount or full payment.

HEAL-Link

Hellenic Academic Libraries Link (HEAL-Link), in the context of the negotiations for the renewal of its agreements, managed, where possible, to make a provision for open access (hereinafter OA) publications alongside with the access to the full text of the subscribed content. Specifically:

At this stage, all the agreements with the provision for OA publications support the publication of articles only in scientific electronic journals.
As the agreements provide different clauses for publishing in OA, we recommend you read carefully the terms and conditions provided for each publisher.
In order to enable OA provision, the corresponding author should be a member of the community of HEAL-Link members, and the submission of the publication with the author’s institutional account is recommended.
In cases where an exemption from the cost of publication is provided for a certain number of publications, priority will be given to active members of the community of HEAL-Link members, i.e. authors and/or researchers who have an active relationship with a HEAL-Link member.
